    How to Overclock P35 Platinum?(1)

This is the BIOS menu of P35 Platinum. Except for peripherals, system time, power management, the functions about performance are included in “Cell Menu”. Users who want to adjust the frequency of processor, memory or other devices (such as graphic card bus and south bridge) can use this menu to do the settings.
One thing to remember, if you are not familiar with the BIOS setting, it is recommended loading “Load Optimized Defaults” to finish all the settings quickly, and make the system works properly. Before you do overclocking, we suggest that users should load this setting first, then do the fine-tune.
Attention:It's very important to keep system stable while installing the operating system(OS). Any minor mistake may result in instability of the OS. Therefore, we strongly recommend you to use the default value before installing the OS.
    Cell Menu of P35 Platinum

Every adjustment concerning overclocking is located in the "Cell Menu", including:
    • Intel EIST
    • Adjust CPU FSB Frequency
    • CPU Ratio CMOS Setting
    • Advanced DRAM Configuration
    • FSB/Memory Ratio
    • PCIEx4 Speed Controller
    • Adjust PCIE Frequency
    • Auto Disable DIMM/PCI Frequency
    • CPU Voltage
    • Memory Voltage
    • VTT FSB Voltage
    • NB Voltage
    • SB I/O Power
    • SB Core Power
    • Spread Spectrum
The user interface of “Cell Menu” is quite easy and groups relative functions together; users can judge the relative functions of adjustment and make adjustment step by step.
 Before you overclocking, please set “D.O.T. Control” and“Intel EIST” functions to be Disabled (Default is Enabled). For the two settings will decide the voltage of processor, system bus, which have to be disabled to enable user defined function. When the setting is finished, “CPU Ratio CMOS Setting” option will appear.
Next, we suggest users disable “Spread Spectrum” before overclocking, because it will limit overclocking.
Then we will talk about the overclocking-related items in detail:
    1. CPU Frequency : After loading Optimized Defaults, this option will auto detect and display the frequency of CPU. Take Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 processor as example, which will show “333 (MHz)” here. Adjusting frequency could be done by numeric keys or “Page Up” and “Page Down”. During adjusting, the value of grayed font “Adjusted CPU Frequency” will change to display the operating frequency.
    2. Processor Frequency Multiplier: Based on the frequency of processors, such as 1333MHz, 1066MHz and 800MHz, the range of multiplier will be different.
    3. Advance DRAM Configuration : This option is for adjusting the delay cycle of memory, and the lower the value, the faster the speed. Nevertheless, the limitation depends on the quality of memory modules.
Tips:Also, if you are using the common overclocking memory modules in the market, we recommend you to enter Cell Menu> Advanced DRAM Configuration > Configure DRAM Timing by SPD, then switch the option to Disable, then it will appear 9 sub options for users to achieve better memory performance.
    4. FSB/Memory Ratio : This setting decides the relationship between FSB and memory ratio. If it were set to ”Auto”, the clock of memory will be the same with the frequency of the processor. If it were decided by users, please follow the rule 1:1.25. For example, 1333MHz processor with DDR2-800 memory, then 1333MHz / 4 x 1.25 x 2 = 833MHz, the clock of DDR2 will be 833MHz.

    5. Adjust PCIE Frequency : Usually, PCI Express bus clock has no direct relationship with overclocking; nevertheless, fine tune will help overclocking as well.(The default value is 100, it is not recommended to set to 120 above, which might damage the graphic card.)
    6. CPU Voltage : This item plays a critical role in overclocking, but due to the relationship is complicated, which is not easy to find the best setting. We suggest users fine tune this value patiently, for processors might crash due to wrong setting. According to our experience, with a good CPU fan, the CPU voltage doesn’t need to set to the limit. Take Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 processor as example, it is recommended to set the voltage between 1.45~1.5V.
    7. Memory Voltage: Because the memory is controlled by north bridge, the voltage of memory has to be raised up as the core devices go up. Of course, the limit of the voltage depends on the quality of memory modules.
    8. VTT FSB Voltage : To ensure every core device has close operating voltage, the VTT FSB Voltage must go up as well. The value should not be high, or it will cause bed effect.
    9. NB Voltage : North Bridge plays the critical role in overclocking. Because it is important to remain stability of processor, memory and graphic card, which should be achieved by increasing voltage. We suggest users doing fine tune in this item.
    10. SB I/O Power : South Bridge controls device connection and expansion card bus, which plays more important role in overclocking on Intel platform lately. The default voltage of ICH9R is 1.5V, which controls the voltage adjustment of I/O devices. We suggest increasing the voltage to 1.7~1.8V, which will improve the stability between NB and SB, and helps the overclocking as well.
    11. SB Core Power : South Bridge has been ignored during overclocking in the past, but it does improve the performance while increasing the voltage.
Besides, one thing to remember, MSI provides different font colors in voltage options: gray represents default, white means safe, danger in red.

Tips :MSI reminds you, check the fan speed and the temperature often. Good cooling environment plays a critical role in overclocking.
Attention:P35 Platinum is a powerful mainboard, which provides complete overclocking options and system protection. If you fail to overclock over three times, the system will load default BIOS value automatically to boot the system safely. Before you overclock, please make sure every component could endure overclocking. MSI takes no responsibility for damage from improper overclocking. This document is for reference only.

    How to Overclock P35 Platinum?(2)
MSI’s P35 Platinum mainboard is quite powerful, bundled with Intel new generation 45nm technology, 1333MHz multi-core processors, which will bring more DIY experience for overclocking users. Of course, MSI provides safe protection for overclocking, for users to enjoy overclocking without worrying about failure.
We will talk about how to adjust voltage of every device step by step in the following description. This is the result we experience with our 3rd party vendors. Nevertheless, the quality of every device is different, so the actual result may differ from our experiment. You may find the best result through different combination and adjustment.
Tips :Overcloking will increase the voltage of core devices, which will generate more heat than usual, thus, cooling would be a important issue for overclocking users.
Attention:OS is the software environment which every computer user will contact every day. The stability of OS will affect the operation of the system. We suggest that users should restore the default setting during OS installation and not enable any overclocking option. We used Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 to pair with P35 Platinum mainboard. The memory modules come from Corsair’s CM2X1024-8500C5 DDR2-1066, and the graphic card is Nvidia GeForce 8600GTS.
    Corsair CM2X1024-8500C5 DDR2-1066 5-5-5-15 2T 1.8V memory modules

The famous Corsair memory modules have excellent overclocking performance. We suggest using DDR2-1066 or higher modules.
    The default BIOS value:
The picture from system detect software:
Next, we enter the Cell Menu in BIOS, We will adjust the frequency of processor, multiplier and voltage, and the frequency and voltage of memory.
In the first setting, we set frequency to 400MHz, multiplier to 9, and the CPU clock could reach 3600MHz, which is 16.67% higher than the default 3000MHz. The following picture is the situation under 400MHz:
The second step we do is increasing the frequency of processor, and remaining stability of the system. We set the frequency of processor to 500MHz, and the multiplier to 7.(default is 9) See the following picture:

    The Performance Increase by Overclocking

According to your different setting, the result should be different. The first step will increase the performance of memory, and the second step may increase the overall system performance.
The following is the performance difference between default setting (left) and overclocking (right):
Next is the comparison of frequency, we used 3DMark 05 for testing:
